Vitamin B5, also known as pantothenic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin that is required for life. This vitamin is a must have in your diet because it is required to form coenzyme-A (CoA) and to metabolize as well as synthesize carbohydrates, fats and proteins.Small amounts of pantothenic acid can be found in just about everything you eat and particularly high amounts are found in:
- Legumes
- Whole-grain cereals
- Eggs
- Royal Jelly
- Meat
Royal Jelly is a boney bee secretion that the bee uses for nutrition. However, it has found its place in the cosmetics industry as well. Although it is often sold as a dietary supplement, there have been serious side effects when ingesting it. However, it has various health benefits for the skin because pantothenic acid is commonly used in the beauty products industry.Although the most active form of Vitamin B5 is pantethine, it is unstable for storing, especially for long periods of time, which does not make it suitable as a vitamin tablet or liquid. Instead, calcium pantothenate is used as the dietary supplement form of B5; you just have to use more of this form. The recommended daily allowance in adults is 5 mg per day. Pregnant women should get 6 mg and breastfeeding women should get 7 mg.Vitamin B5 deficiency is very rare and therefore not studied immensely. There have been a few deficiency cases, but these are typically seen in starvation cases. Nearly all symptoms are reversed when the person begins consuming pantothenic acid. The symptoms of a deficiency for vitamin B5 are similar to other B vitamin deficiencies and include:
- Fatigue
- Nausea
- Allergies
- Abdominal pain
Vitamin B5 has also been used in a variety of other areas as well. Studies have suggested that skin irritation and hair loss may be the result of deficiency as well. Because of this, the cosmetic industry has begun adding pantothenic acid to shampoos and other hair care products. There have also been studies in regards to pantothenic acid and using it as an acne treatment. Vitamin B5 is also known to assist in stress reduction.
